Pastoralism with shepherdess, shepherd and dog is probably one of the oldest forms of agriculture, which, however, has slowly lost its importance in the German-speaking countries over the last decades. Now it is gradually being brought back, as shepherding is not only a form of livestock protection, but also brings numerous benefits for farm animals and the biodiversity of alpine pastures. Shepherding is thus characterised not only by a close bond with their own animals, but also by a broad view of the entire ecosystem.

Pastoralism and its revival also play a central role in LIFEstockProtect. In this conference, the participants will gain exciting insights into the profession, the challenges and the future of shepherding in Austria, Germany and Italy through the presentations of four shepherdesses from the project region.

Speakers:

  • Anna Huber (Germany): young and motivated career changer

  • Astid Summerer (South Tyrol): Shepherdess with years of experience, also transhumance

  • Barbara Crea (Italy): Shepherdess and farmer with a lot of livestock protection experience

  • Christina Ziegerhofer (Austria): Shepherding started with internships and now as a main profession

Details: The conference is free of charge, but requires registration. It will be held via ZOOM, for which no installation is required. The conference will offer simultaneous translation into Italian, German and English. There will be an opportunity to ask each speaker questions in Italian, English or German.
