Awards


MIDAS, the European Association of Daily Newspapers in Minority and Regional Languages was founded in 2001, and has its headquarters at the Institute for Minority Rights (IMR) at the European Academy. Since 2003, this association of 30 member newspapers has throughout Europe has hosted the "MIDAS Journalism Prize" and the "Otto von Habsburg Journalism Prize for Minority Protection and Cultural Diversity in Europe."

Named for the longstanding MEP and honorary president of the European Parliament, this Pan-European prize is awarded to journalists who have dedicated themselves specifically to the protection of minorities and cultural diversity in the context of the European integration process in their daily work. The MIDAS Prize is awarded to journalists of excellence who write for MIDAS member newspapers. For both prize categories, journalistic independence and a high degree of professionalism are prerequisites.
