ABSTRACT

The internal project ESLAB PIVOTAL (Platforms, Instruments and sensors for enVironmental Observations:  sTrategy and Actions for Long-term sustainability) aims by one hand to establish a strategy to improve the utilization, efficiency, and longevity of the existing technology infrastructure by means of optimal operations and maintenance. By the other, to foster the participation of regional, national and international actors (like SMEs, research groups, etc.) to motivate the creation of new applications and products.

During the last years, the Province of Bolzano has invested many resources to potentiate the development of technology as one of the main economic drivers. Local research institutions joint this strategy. Eurac contributes to this vision by fostering applied research in different disciplines: health, energy, well-functioning political and social systems and monitoring and understanding processes in our environment. Especially for this last topic, Eurac participates in several projects by using technology. The capacity, experience and knowledge generated through them put Eurac as one of the main international research centers specialized in mountain topics. However, the use of technology has two main drawbacks: long-term sustainability to keep them operative and the access and benefit for the population.
