Greta Simulation Tool

Economic and financial simulation tool for the evaluation of the Near Surface Geothermal Energy (NSGE) systems potential across the Alpine Region.

Near Surface Geothermal Resources in the Territory of the Alpine Space

The reduction in CO2 emissions and energy self-reliance play a key role in the Alpine area and can be fostered through the implementation of low carbon and renewable technologies. Near Surface Geothermal Energy (NSGE) systems are one of the most abundant reliable renewable thermal energy sources, widespread and available in remote mountain areas, needing no transport of energy products and having no direct emissions to air. This web tool carries out a spatial financial and economic evaluation of NSGE potential based on specific information such as the building type, the plant type, country, climatic zone, and heated surface. The simulation tool includes also an interactive map of geothermal potential, allowing the identification of the most suitable areas for each geothermal technology, and a set of information helping evaluation of environmental and economic benefits, and allowing the quantification of the impact that the spread of geothermal energy can have on a territory.

Development

The simulation tool has been developed within the framework of the Alpine Space Greta project, coordinated by Eurac Research. The proposed web tool implements the same methodology applied within the research project for the spatial financial and economic evaluation of NSGE potential. In particular, in the GRETA project, the same method has been replicated for the whole building stock of the selected pilot areas whereas in the proposed web-tool the method is presented for a single building typology (i.e. detached house; office; hotel).

NOTE: The methodology behind the proposed web-tool is only referred to closed-loop systems and relies on an elevated number of working hypothesis.

Features

  • interactive map of geothermal potential
  • Internal rate of return (IRR)
  • Discounted payback period (DPP)
  • Levelized cost of energy (LCOE)
  • simulation on a specific situation (building & plant type, climatic zone, country, heated surface, temperature, annual billing for heating, financial subsidies)
